Abstract

It is known that the number of rural social structures is decreasing nowadays while urban structures are increasing day by day. Cities, over time, require renewal due to various reasons. The demolition and reconstruction or renewal of old urban areas that have fallen into decline in the historical scene of cities is not a new phenomenon. Urban redevelopment, which has been applied at different times and for different reasons, has occurred as a result of various variables affecting the spatial and social development of cities due to economic, political, and cultural reasons. Transformations that occur not only for social needs but also due to unusual developments such as wars and natural disasters contain traces of multifactorial practices. Urban transformation, in its most basic sense, is the transformation of urban areas from their current states into another form, into another situation. This study examines the effects of urban transformation on society through the urban transformation project in the Eyüpsultan District of Istanbul. The aim of the study is to examine the sociological changes in urban transformation areas, to identify social problems emerging in these and similar areas, to determine the changes experienced before and after urban transformation, and to determine how the society reacts to urban transformation projects in Istanbul.
